The autopoiesis of the soul.
As HUMANS we live primarily in words, ideas, images, not in the body. We are not GROUNDED in the earth, but HANGING on the sphere of insubstantial shared meanings up in the air. This is why mythologically man was often imagined as an “ARBOR INVERSA,” a tree that has its roots in the sky and its treetops in the earth.
Life and death are not undialectical, i.e., mutually exclusive, opposites. Death is the very basis of life. Without death, that is, without the capacity to die, no life. Life’s uprising is absolutely impudent, selfish, arrogant behavior above the level of mere lifeless being. In life we have something that, as a dance without a dancer, is thoroughly negative, without any positive existence of its own. Life is and remains a mystery and a truly autonomous reality. The soul, on the other hand, is, as it were, a dance to the power of two: the dance not upon the lifeless, but on biological life, which itself is a dance, the dance upon the lifeless. Within and out of the dance as which natural life IS, all of a sudden und out of the blue another dance commences, the life of the soul.
Just as life had pushed off from lifeless being, so, within the sphere of biological life, “the soul” suddenly has the nerve to rise up and go beyond biological life, pushing off from it to something unheard of before, an utterly new dimension. It has the audacity to have IDEAS about the world and about life itself, to insist on giving life a TELOS or PURPOSE, on INTERPRETING and trying to UNDERSTAND what is and what happens; it insists on THINKING, on entertaining FANTASIES, and on connecting MEANINGS with events and things. Furthermore, it makes us develop a sense of self, relate to ourselves, reflect about ourselves, and also comprehend and establish ourselves as “I”. “The soul” wants to become real in empirical life; it wants to have a presence in consciousness; more than only in subjective consciousness: it wants to be objectively BORN into the world. Pathology is very important to the soul’s life: it is often THE FIRST IMMEDIACY OF A NEW STAGE OF DEVELOPENT: What is actually intended first appears in distorted form. This aiming for its self-display in its fullness, is what gives to it its fundamental process and OPUS character. It is and happens as the ongoing OPUS MAGNUM in the empirical world.
